Nanette and her husband Bert retired to Florida in 2017, to live their dream of enjoying a “Lifetime of Saturdays” along beautiful Daytona Beach, a place that had long been their family's go-to vacation spot. She retired as Vice President, Operation’s Engineering Manager in FM Global’s Cleveland office. During her 31 year career, she has held various management and leadership roles, in various offices across the USA. She continues to provide pro bono career coaching to professionals within that organization.
Nanette holds a Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering from The University of Pittsburgh. She takes joy in lending her leadership skills in support of the community. She has served on various advisory boards and played key roles in the founding of various nonprofits, including ASSET, Inc, J. W Alvey PTA, GFWC Dominion Woman's Club, and Daytona Dog Beach, Inc. Since moving to Daytona Beach, she has been an annual sponsor of Halifax Humane Society and spends close to 1,000 hrs/yr volunteering in various capacities. In 2019, she was named their Volunteer of the Year. In 2023, she was named Animal Advocate of the Year. Nanette enjoys spending time with loved ones and friends, travelling, gardening, golf and pursuing various creative interests. She has 2 adult daughters and an extended family that consists of 2 adult step-children and their spouses, 5 grandchildren, and 4 great grandchildren. Mac, Samson, Delilah and Cheez, her four-legged loves, round out the family.

Paula Flug has been involved in the Animal Welfare industry since 2014. She served Halifax Humane Society (HHS) for 6 years starting as Veterinary Service Manager. During her time at HHS her work ethic and passion resulted in a promotion leading to a 5 and 1/2 year term as the Animal Care Director.
Paula's understanding of operations is diverse and thorough. She spent time in most functions of a shelter setting. The expansiveness of programs at HHS required her to excel in and manage admissions, adoption, husbandry, animal behavior, retail and more. She often employs a "hands on" approach learning specific procedures herself before drafting and employing policy adjustments in each of these.
In 2016 Paula presented a segment on animal hoarding at the Volusia County Hoarding Task Force Workshop. In 2017 Paula was part of the original team to help P.A.W.S. (Protecting Animal Wellness Society) group form at Embry Riddle. The program targets a significant reduction in the campus cat population over a 5-year time frame. After the group officially became a Registered Student Organization, she presented on different subjects consisting of trap-neuter-return (TNR), animal behavior, safety and more.
During the end of Paula's term at HHS, she assisted C-level staff in designing, maintaining operations and enhancing programs during the Capital Campaign to "reimagine" a new campus. The project led to a new future for animal welfare in the community.
Since her retirement, from Halifax Humane Society, she has homeschooled her son and daughter and is a founding member of Daytona Dog Beach, Inc. She enjoys spending time with her family (including her 2 dogs Molly and Chase) and staying active in the Animal Welfare industry through assisting various rescue groups and animal shelters in Volusia County.
My name is Brenda Balas, I have been married to the love of my life for 42 years. I have 4 children, 5 grandchildren, and at the present time only one fur baby. Two of my great loves in life are my fur babies and the beach. Someday I hope to be walking all my fur babies on Daytona Beach.
